Most Top 100 Cryptocurrencies Fail to Survive#

Reaching the top tier of the cryptocurrency market does not guarantee long-term success, according to new research from CryptoRank. The analytics firm found that 71.9% of all tokens that have ever entered the Top 100 by market capitalization are now considered operationally dead.

CryptoRank analyzed 1,539 tokens, classifying a project as "dead" if it had been delisted from major exchanges and recorded less than $10,000 in daily trading volume for more than 90 consecutive days.

The findings challenge the assumption that a Top 100 ranking is a sign of lasting relevance.

Most Tokens Disappear Within a Decade#

According to CryptoRank's analysis, 62% of Top 100 cryptocurrencies become inactive within five years of reaching the rankings. The failure rate climbs to 84.7% after 10 years and 91.5% after 12 years.

The study also found that the median lifespan of a Top 100 token is just two years and four months.

"The key conclusion: reaching the Top 100 does not guarantee long-term potential," CryptoRank said in a post on X.

Ethereum Rivals Account for Most Failures#

CryptoRank also examined the projects that ranked in the Top 100 in July 2021. Only 41 have retained their positions, while 46 dropped out of the rankings and 13 have ceased operations entirely.

The projects that fell out of the Top 100 lost a median 93% of their market value.

Notably, around 65% of those underperforming projects were Layer-1 and Layer-2 blockchains that were once promoted as potential "Ethereum killers." In contrast, stablecoins strengthened their position in the market, doubling their representation in the Top 100 from eight to 16 projects.

Crypto Survival Remains the Exception#

The broader cryptocurrency market paints an even bleaker picture. Separate research from CoinGecko found that 53.2% of all cryptocurrencies listed on GeckoTerminal have stopped trading, with 11.6 million tokens failing in 2025 alone.

The data suggests that a Top 100 ranking represents a snapshot of market popularity rather than proof of long-term survival, highlighting how quickly leadership can change in the digital asset industry.
